Patagonia is the number one selling brand among American outdoor retail stores and REI, the largest outdoor chain in the US. It has numerous brand stores across the US and ranks second globally in sales in Japan. It is considered one of the most beloved brands by outdoor enthusiasts. Patagonia is renowned for its design, with its product catalogs, brochures, and print advertising designs winning gold and silver awards for nearly a decade. Founded in [year missing], Patagonia’s founder was a blacksmith who initially manufactured climbing equipment to sell at Yosemite Rock Climbing Site before returning to Los Angeles to surf. Patagonia’s earliest apparel was sourced from rugby shirts imported from England and rebranded. Later, they began their own clothing manufacturing in a local fire station office building. Patagonia places great emphasis on environmental protection and resource conservation; all electricity at its headquarters comes from large outdoor solar panels. It was one of the first companies globally to levy an “Earth Tax,” allocating a percentage of its global sales revenue to local environmental conservation efforts. Patagonia’s active promotion of environmental protection and green principles has made it a source of pride for politicians and celebrities, including former US President Clinton, to own Patagonia clothing.

Patagonia boasts an exceptionally talented design team. Designer Ericce specializes in sportswear and skiwear; Julie, a fabric and color designer, joined Patagonia three years ago after graduating from a prestigious design school; she says she has to work incredibly hard to keep up with Patagonia’s growth; Kale is the women’s sportswear designer; and Chris is an engineer specializing in fabric research and testing. Her work includes testing waterproof seams and zippers on waterproof fabrics, ensuring cotton products are free of pesticides and chemical fertilizers, and guaranteeing that recycled materials are harmless to humans and those with allergies. Allergy resistant, children’s products undergo safety testing, as well as a series of fabric characteristic tests, including pilling resistance for fleece fabrics, wind resistance tests, tear resistance tests for nylon fabrics, colorfastness and consistency tests for various fabrics, and durability tests. All new materials must pass all these tests before they can be used in Patagonia clothing. Therefore, Patagonia is always very cautious when using new materials.
